Wood is a noble material that has been able to renew itself in the age of authenticity and naturalness in the home. Very much in vogue for interior design, it is still the leading material used in the furniture industry. Wood is synonymous with elegance and aesthetics, whether for floors with wooden parquet, exposed structures such as beams or interior furniture. The variety of grains and shades offered by each wood species makes this material a must-have for both rustic and refined decorations. But unlike composite materials, this one is “alive”, it can move over the years and therefore requires maintenance to preserve its original appearance and character.
Wood’s sturdiness, combined with the thermal comfort it offers its surroundings, makes it a popular material with design enthusiasts and interior architects alike. But these are not the only advantages of this material, which is particularly attractive for its aesthetic appeal. Easy to work with, you can easily modify its appearance (shape, shade…) and personalize it with finishing products.
And even though it’s renowned for being easy to maintain, wood indoors doesn’t require the same treatments as it does outdoors when exposed to the elements. As evidenced by the foundations of buildings and antique furniture, it is a particularly durable material. But it still needs to be protected to preserve the qualities of its essence over the long term.
Before applying any protection to a wooden surface, it must be cleaned and stripped of any product or finish, using an abrasive stripper or sander.
Next, apply a first coat of primer to the wood. Primers, also known as hard coats, insulators, multi-coats, primers or undercoats, are the ideal product to prepare wood for a finishing product.
The final step is to coat your interior wood with a finishing product to protect and decorate it. Finishing products such as varnishes or lacquers have a real protective function on wood, whether against scratches, knocks, stains or humidity, as they provide the wood with physico-chemical resistance.
But the finish also plays a decorative role, giving the wood its final appearance. Depending on the finishing product you select, you can stain the wood darker or darker to enhance it, and choose the degree of gloss you wish to give it.
